Physical Security and the Security Survey
32 hour course

This four-day workshop instructs the participant in the basics of physical security components, their applications in homes, business, and industry, and the evaluation of the existing physical security in a business related structure. This is a basic course designed for an audience with little or no background in physical security or experience in conducting physical security surveys.

Upon completion of this course, participants will have a clear working knowledge of physical security components and their interplay in securing a building, the ability to detect inadequate applications of physical security and make appropriate recommendations for improvement. Additionally, after physically examining a structure, participants will learn how to document a written report using a check-off survey form describing the physical security vulnerabilities and recommended improvements.

Participants will spend the first two days of the course learning about the various forms of physical security available to offer deterrence, delay, and denial to an intruder. The third day instructs the participants in the elements of completing a security survey and then gives them an opportunity to conduct an actual survey on an area business while working with a partnering classmate. The final day has the group completing and presenting their surveys for peer and instructor critique and sharing of issues and solutions. Participants should be prepared to work into the evening of the third day completing their reports and evaluating the security lighting of their business.

Topics Covered: Alarm sensors and systems, window security options, safes and vaults, fencing and barriers, security lighting, and locking devices.
